Playlist

In another life I’d love to be a musician. In this life, I make playlists. I’ve been listening to the one I made for this issue for four months at this point. It unintentionally has a bit of a movie theme but I guess that’s alright.

  • Broken Man – St. Vincent
    • St. Vincent has been one of my absolute favorites for the last 10 years and this new song just kicks ass. I can’t get enough of that crazy buzzy guitar thing. Rebecca and I saw her for the 3rd time a little while back. We ended up in the front row (that’s a whole other story). There’s some video from that show in this video.
  • Generator – Justice
    • Justice wasn’t a band that I paid attention to until my daughter Raine had us check them out when we were at ACL a few years ago. What a show.
  • Challengers – Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
  • “I Know” – Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
    • These are two tracks from the Challengers soundtrack. I haven’t seen this movie yet but Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross don’t disappoint.
  • I’m in Love – Jelani Aryeh
  • How You Satisfy Me – Spectrum
    • This is from the film Pricilla, directed by Sofia Coppola. She has such great taste in music. This track is totally anachronistic (see also Marie Antoinette) but it feels like that time which we’ll be getting closer to in a little bit.
  • Sinner – The Last Dinner Party
    • I think The Last Dinner Party is exciting. I’ve had their album on repeat. I’ve got two of their songs on here.
  • This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us – Sparks
  • The Passenger – Siouxsie & The Banshees
    • A while back my brother texts me that he’s been listening to the Siouxsie & the Banshees album “Through The Looking Glass.” This was my favorite band of the 80s but I didn’t really appreciate this album when it came out. It’s a covers album but without the internet or any way to investigate these songs it seemed odd to me at the time. It also surprised me that Joe is listening to it now because, as he said to me, he was “too much of a metal head back then to appreciate it.” Here’s two of my favorites – “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for the Both of Us” by Sparks and the Siouxsie & the Banshee’s cover of Iggy Pop’s “The Passenger.”
  • Pale Blue Eyes – The Velvet Underground
    • Now we’re sort of in the 70s so it’s time for a song from the film “Perfect Days” by Wim Wenders. I love this film and I love how much the main character, Hirayama, loves these songs.
  • Let the Mystery Be – Iris DeMent
  • Bored – Waxahatchee
  • My Love Mine All Mine – Mitski
    • I don’t think this song is in a movie – yet.
  • Perfect Day – Lou Reed
    • Another song from the film “Perfect Days”
  • Nothing Matters – The Last Dinner Party
  • One Night/All Night – Justice & Tame Impala
    • These last few songs kick it back into dance mode.
  • Yeah x10 – Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
  • Weapon of Choice – Fatboy Slim
    • Someone on the internet pointed out that the words to this song are about Dune. So here’s another “movie” song.
  • Murder on the Dancefloor – Sophie Ellis-Bextor
    • This song is from the closing scene of the film “Saltburn” directed by Emerald Fennell (another director with great taste in music). It makes me want to dance around the house too but I think I’ll keep my clothes on.
