McChristmas

Here’s a little holiday cheer I call McChristmas. I could write all about it here but you should just watch it - it’s a videoblog.

Very nice Michael…to a point. I was following it along until you watered the ending down with your soppy analysis of white middle class guilt. Seriously though….how do we answer this problem and what do we do about it. I’m sitting in a catatonic phase…doing the same as you. I will not hide my child from “McD’s”….you can’t hide them from it. Not possible. I’m in the same position with some of the same eating values. My kid got the same SEGA toy this week as well and is really happy with it…and really….he hardly could care less about the food…he just wants the toy!!! And Mc’ds really scored with this SEGA thing…..and tell me…how much is SEGA paying for this? What are the economics involved?

Excellent video blog. I found your blog via your daugther’s, which you must know suddenly became very well-known in the blogosphere. After watching this and reading a little bit, I can see where her precociousness comes from.

I find myself in a similar situation, except I’m not a parent yet. However, I do think a bit differently about religion from most of my family, and I agree with you on the problem of everyone rushing out to McD’s just to make life seem normal to their kids.

Of course, as soon as you start talking publicly about maybe not going to McD’s when a new happy meal toy comes out anymore, the owners and employees start screaming about how you’re trying to end all business in the country…

McDs is a test. It’s god, testing you. Use the force, Michael. That toy looks pretty cool. Keep up the goo work.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Shannon - point taken. It didn’t occur to me like that at the time that I said it but I can see it now. As to what to do about any of it - I don’t think there is a thing that we can do, other than be ourselves and not be quiet about it. I’ve found that my daughters pay way more attention to me than I ever thought.

Great post. I say at my blog/vlog, http://www.thevoiz.com: Michael Verdi, father of Dylan Verdi (the youngest blogger probably that I spoke about a few days ago), has some really interesting things to say about Christmas. I find it interesting because I think it applies to more than Christmas, like church, faith, and God. I think his comments could easily be a new field of theology, called McTheology…

    I’d subscribe to your McTheology.

Hey Michael, I found your blog via Waxy.org and I liked this post. As a Christian I think Christmas has just become a cultural tradition that has nothing to do with Christianity anymore. I’m sorry your wife’s family tries to push their beliefs on you–“I don’t believe this is what God ever intended.”

Hey, don’t worry about being vegan. For every pork chop you don’t eat you consume less resources. Your footprint is smaller and think about that happy smiling pig that you didn’t have to eat. He’s going to have his happy meal and the happy meal you have won’t be him.

I say take the anti-social plunge and put your foot down and say NO McDonals. or maybe act like you dont know fast food exists.. thats how I try to live. sort of.

and yes… im a year late.. but this is, Im thinking, a timeless one.

I saw this for the first time a year later and I have to say it’s still relevant, and probably will be for a long time to come. Very clever. One thing I believe is that one can really get into the “spirit” of the Christmas season in a positive way, independent of any religious beliefs. After all, the Christians just ripped off the peagan winter solstice celebration and, independent of the Paegan (sp?) religion, it’s a celebration of the shortest day of the year, of the “return to light” as days become longer and that’s a physical fact, which is pretty cool, and, I think worth celebrating. (boy that’s one long comment)

Verdi, this conversation should be transcribed. It is just simple and to the point. Great stuff.
