Today is my brother Joe’s birthday so instead of having a surprise when he unwraps his gift, I’d thought I’d surprise him with it here. It’s still a surprise, right?

Also, I mention it in the video but this damn giant box of crap that got delivered to my house reminded me of some of Ryanne’s videos.

[Update 9.8.06] Check THIS out!

And if you look closely at the end of the video you might notice that I changed the license to Attribution-Non Commercial, dropping the share-alike stipulation. This way it’s easier for people to share and remix my videos. This all came out of a long email discussion about licenses and collaboration. The problem comes in when you try to combine two videos with different share-alike licenses. The stipulation of a share-alike license is that you release the derivitave work under the same exact license which is something you won’t be able to do if you combine work with two different licenses (BY-SA and BY-NC-SA for example).

    what is the deal?
    it’s so wasteful

hurray for videos about excess packaging

That’s bananas. I loathe excess packaging, particularly those damn peanuts. I once ordered a pillow that was packed with styrofoam peanuts. A pillow! I don’t get it!

In New York there’s a grocery delivery company that is notorious for excessive packaging. Boxes, to be exact.

Michael, I bet you remember the 80’s when CD’s came wrapped in all that extra cardboard. At least all those styofoam peanuts didn’t spill on your floor!

well.. let’s think about this a little more. If we didn’t have plastic bubbles in our packages, we could not make the cool popping sounds we all like to make.

or if you just want something to touch or to have into your pocket, they can send the credit card into a letter as they usually do here in Italy

two weeks ago the same seller sent me 5 cd into a 15×10x5 inches box that can contain maybe 25-30 cd

Wow, interesting to see that you’ve decided to change your CC license… but very admirable since you’re obviously doing it to allow others to use it. After that whole collaboration discussion, I almost want to release our work under an All Rights Reserved License! I won’t give up on my CC license however… I believe in what CC stands for. Perhaps someday I’ll tweak the license a bit, but for now I’m happy with it.

from what i recall while working for a Custom Mix CD startup in 99/00, the packaging is larger to avoid theft and lost items as it is in transit, which apparently ends up costing much more than the extra packaging costs.
bubble wrap for a credit card is pushing it, but on the other hand their are people who will insist on returning even slightly damaged goods. This credit card thing could be looked at as a collectible as well, so if the packaging is not as it was, then it could get bent or ripped etc. Then the person wants a new one and cha-ching.

look on the bright side, you have a box and bubble wrap for your own packaging needs now :) or did you throw it away ;)

Yeah I keep all these boxes and stuff around my desk or in a pile in the garage. Then one a year or so I use some of them to sell stuff on ebay.
