Hail To The Thief

Hail To The Thief

I haven’t posted a video in three weeks. Mostly I’ve been busy with getting NODE101 :: San Antonio off the ground. I’ve also been pretty upset by what’s happened in New Orleans and I didn’t really know what to say about it until the other day. I was driving Dylan to school and Rebecca’s iPod was on shuffle. After some John Lennon and Aretha Franklin this Radiohead song came on and this video popped into my head fully formed.

Watch the video then visit this site.

    I’m sorry…
I couldn’t watch it all… it’s like the 10th vlog of New Orleans that I see, and the devastation is too much. I still can’t comprehend how somehting like this happened….

This is fucking perfect. I have been so outraged the last few weeks about whats going on but I just couldn’t find the words (other than incoherent cursing everytime I see his face on tv). You put your finger right on it. Thanks!

Here’s a comment I received via email. I guess they wanted to be anonymous so I won’t post their name or email address.

So it’s Bush’s fault that there was a hurricane and the levies broke huh? Tell me what more he could have done. All you liberals do is blame everything on the Republican party or the president and whine like little babies while the president is working hard to get those people support and healthcare. Most of the city was full of water. Try organizing to get supplies in through that. And you say that thousands have died. Well don’t you think it’s a little difficult to get several meals and medical attension for THOUSANDS of people. The Bush bashing started the day after the hurricane even though there is no way to get supplies in that fast. Our reaction was slower to the Tsunami in Indonesia but they didn’t complain and whine like babies. My god do you think you’re helping those people by bashing someone who did nothing wrong. Frankly I think that Bush was wrong to appologize. If you’d actually have read any of the constitution concerning states’ rights you would know that they governor of Louisiana was far more at fault than Bush because the National Guard in the area is under his command and being there he obviously knows more about the situation. Way to show support for your country by being just another brainless liberal in a sea of morons making the U.S. look even worse in the world while whining about it and then blaming Bush for our county’s ill reputation in the world. God damn you asshole. Go to college again and take some political classes and figure out how the system works. Maybe then you’ll realize what a mindless idiot you were because you’d understand the situation more fully though that is very unlikely for a douche bag like yourself.

I loved your video blog and your site’s but now I have both lost respect for you as an intellectual, a human being, and an American citizen. Move to France if all you’re going to do is bitch about people suffering while you do nothing but spout liberal propeganda on you’re video blog.

Oh man…at least post their name.

    Excellent video. Simply excellent.

I guess the anonymous emailer chooses not to hear the dozens of reports that the Red Cross and hundreds of individual people with boats and delegations from other states were all lined up with help and aid, but were prevented from entering the city by the federally-commanded national guard. At gun point. I guess that person chooses not to hear the accounts of the military spending their time and resources arresting people for “stealing” water and food and school buses — arresting the heros instead of joining them, helping them. This emailer chooses not to believe that the people under Bush’s command could do better than arrive five and six days later. Insane. It’s very hard to understand how people would rather remain blind in the face of extreme proof that something is wrong, than consiously live in a world where something is so very wrong.

BILL MAHER’s CLOSE ON HIS SHOW:

“Mr. President, this job can’t be fun for you any more. There’s no more money to spend–you used up all of that. You can’t start another war because you used up the army. And now, darn the luck, the rest of your term has become the Bush family nightmare: helping poor people. Listen to your Mom. The cupboard’s bare, the credit cards maxed out. No one’s speaking to you. Mission accomplished.

“Now it’s time to do what you’ve always done best: lose interest and walk away. Like you did with your military service and the oil company and the baseball team. It’s time. Time to move on and try the next fantasy job. How about cowboy or space man? Now I know what you’re saying: there’s so many other things that you as President could involve yourself in. Please don’t. I know, I know. There’s a lot left to do. There’s a war with Venezuela. Eliminating the sales tax on yachts. Turning the space program over to the church. And Social Security to Fannie Mae. Giving embryos the vote.

“But, Sir, none of that is going to happen now. Why? Because you govern like Billy Joel drives. You’ve performed so poorly I’m surprised that you haven’t given yourself a medal. You’re a catastrophe that walks like a man. Herbert Hoover was a shitty president, but even he never conceded an entire city to rising water and snakes.

“On your watch, we’ve lost almost all of our allies, the surplus, four airliners, two trade centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the City ofNew Orleans. Maybe you’re just not lucky. I’m not saying you don’t love this country. I’m just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side.

“So, yes, God does speak to you. What he is saying is: ‘Take a hint.’ “

    Hey Verdi,

Bush and his cronies deserve a crueller fate than impeachment.

When government fails, the people who elected that government owe it to themselves to overthrow it. It is called “rebellion” and it has been practiced since the inception of democracy. If you have the chance, read “The Rebel” by Albert Camus.

Fuck Bush for destroying my country and my countrymen. I deserve to hate him for that; if I didn’t I couldn’t call myself a humanist, or an American.

And for fuck’s sake, how can the Bush Christians still call themselves Christians?

So what do we do? Do we scream across the internet at each other? Will the rest of America hear us? Or do we march on Washington, and take the power back?

They are taking the guns from the New Orleans residents, but the rest of us are still armed. We’re armed with weapons like words and actions. Which speak louder? It’s time to stop talking about it. 5 years of this psychopath is enough. It needs to stop before he destroys the rest of us.

What I find incredibly hard to understand is how 39% can think he is still doing a good job.

It boggles my mind the stupidity of some of the people that live in this country.

welcome to the world of multiple realities.

the american dream crashing headlong into cruel reality, but obvioously, people are still free to choose which world they want to believe in.

beyond all of the suffering and criminal incompetence and the rest of the madness, this is a great example of reality collision.

the fact that the visuals here, in mr. verdi’s videoblog of all places, were provided by the mainstream media, is a good indication of how severe this rip in the space time continuim really was.

despite my hopes, it seems to be healing rather quickly.

maybe it’s because so many of the population took that anonymous emailer’s advice, and got themselves the proper “education”.

    what’s the question, again?
how to communicate in a world where 2+2 can equal whatever delusion you want.

    good work, mr. verdi

“Go to college again and take some political classes and figure out how the system works.” Hello? The “system” for federal response to disasters is B-R-O-K-E-N. And sometimes, a system is just a system, it’s like time – a manmade thing nature snubs her nose at. A quote, a can’t recall where I read it: Make a plan and you will give God a reason to laugh.

Michael, I love the passion and punch and reality you express in your videos.

Also, I think deep down I think Mr. B’s “apology” smells much to rovie to be taken seriously. If I were Laura I’d be embarassed.

this is sad, and whats happening in iraq is also sad. STOP THE PRESIDENT

  15. Posted September 18, 2005 at 6:44 pm | Permalink

Verdi, I know I can always count on you to not pull punches. I am so grateful for that. This is a very powerful video.

I almost wrote that I can’t believe that anon email you posted, but then I thought and remembered that some of my relations and coworkers are just like that – small-minded ignorant folks who believe that saying anything negative about the president is a terrible thing, even though they likely all criticized Clinton. But that’s different, of course.

Bush has to get the fuck out. How can we get him out legitimately? I will write to my senators and congressman, but that is such a passive move. I would like to do something more.

    Thanks,
    Carl

So what do we do? Do we scream across the internet at each other? Will the rest of America hear us? Or do we march on Washington, and take the power back?

Does anyone know how that would work? Do we just surround the White House until he decides to step down (won’t happen)? How do we do something that will change things tomorrow and not a few years from now?

I don’t know if anything will work.
right now, and for the last week or so, the right wing propaganda machine has been running full tilt, and by about noon tuesday will have the reliable 45% (or more) of the monsters in this country calling for bush to be named emperor and given every medal of honor our country has, twice.

they make black into white, up into down.

about the only thing I can think of is targeting the children of these sheep with as much counter-info as possible.

    I can’t say I’m that optimistic.

From day one, everyone in the US is swimming aganst a relentless tide of propaganda.

for a good run down of all this, the increasingly succeeding effort of the right wing propaganda machine’s effort to make the hurricane into a positive for bush, I urge you to check out thom hartmann’s radio show from sept 19, 2005, particularly the first hour.

    He will go down.

    This disaster makes it clear.

    Their greed has grown shameless.

Considered moving to France or Holland but more courageous to stay and fight. Perhaps I can get my family out before it’s too late.

Thanks for saying it so well.

It is good to see how we are so enlightened and full of such powerful engergy. We all sit and take the time to view these vlogs but yet I see no comments on positive useful energy. Media is powerful. Powerful to the point where we are drinking our own cool-aid. If we all believed in ourselves as much as we think we do, we wouldn’t be looking to blame but to solve. The only thing that comes out clearly in all this is fear. Fear that someone is controlling our lives, fear that somehow someone or something will take away our rights to do nothing. Maybe, just maybe we should use what God has given us and that is the control to decide whether or not to hate, bash, or blame. Don’t pat yourselves on the back so much. You haven’t done anything except continue with the downward spiral that we all contribute. Maybe the message to ‘wake up’ isn’t for the administration. Maybe it is for you.
